Description
Daygustation are the exclusive UK importer of Jean Diot Champagne based in Vinay, near Epernay – a small house founded by Jean Diot in the 1960’s which is still owned and run by his family. Uniquely the grapes come solely from vineyards that they work themselves (whilst most houses buy-in grapes from growers) of which 80% are owned by the family. Most Champagnes are aged for the legal minimum of 15 months whilst the Diot wines spend an average of 30 months on the lees. Thanks to this the wines are well-balanced and vinous and offer excellent value versus the ‘Grandes Marques’ e.g. Bollinger or Moet.
Jean Diot Blanc de Blancs £45
A good value Blanc de Blancs Champagne (made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes which are the most highly prized in Champagne) is rare indeed! It is fresh and elegant with notes of butter, citrus and brioche. Aged for 36 months on the lees this wine has great vinosity – no aggressive bubbles. Great with buttery fish dishes – especially lobster or a posh mac ‘n’ cheese.
Jean Diot Extra Brut £45
Extra brut means less sugar is added at disgorgement giving a drier Champagne. Sugar is often used to mask poor wines, so to make these drier styles the wine quality has to be tip-top. In addition this wine is aged for 48 months on the lees this wine has great vinosity – no aggressive bubbles. Great with wild mushrooms, truffles, parmesan cheese and buttery fish dishes.
Jean Diot Rosé £45
This is a Rosé Champagne with 11% of Pinot Meunier red wine blended into the white base. With such a high proportion of red it is a much deeper hue than most Rosé Champagne and it is incredibly soft thanks to prolonged ageing (24 months) on the lees. The wine has fresh strawberry with cream, raspberry and citrus aromas. Delicious with poached salmon or shellfish like lobster.
Jean Diot Originel Blanc de Noirs Vintage 2018 £70
Blanc de Noirs is the rarest style of Champagne made exclusively from red grapes and unusually this is 100% Pinot Meunier from two special sites. Blanc de Noirs have more weight, richness and red fruit character. This wine would be great with mature hard cheese, Jambon Iberico or game birds like Partridge.
Arteis & Co Vintage 2015 £65
Also made by Jean Diot, the Artéis & Co cuvées are small-batch, vintage-only champagnes. They source small batches of mature vintage champagnes lying on the yeast and then manage the disgorgement process with dosage (sugar) and S02 (sulphur) levels kept to a bare minimum. Because the wines are aged for a very long time on the lees and recently disgorged they are mature and harmonious, yet wonderfully fresh and precise. A fantastically mature, yet fresh Vintage Champagne produced in tiny quantities (3000 bottles produced). Rich and elegant with brioche and nut notes. Great with truffle, wild mushrooms or Parmesan. Only 3000 bottles are produced.
Arteis & Co Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2013 £85
This is a rare Blanc de Blancs (Chardonnay only) Champagne with only 2000 bottles produced. It is rich and mature with notes of butter, citrus and hazelnut. Great with buttery fish dishes – especially lobster. Only
