Description
Some bottle age has transformed this Chenin Blanc into a wonderfully rich and elegant wine with intense notes of candied apple and blossom. With high acidity it needs food to show at its best. Pork with apples or veal in a creamy sauce could work really well.
Grape
Chenin Blanc is one of the world’s most undervalued grapes and is capable of producing dry, off-dry and lusciously sweet wines. The grape finds its greatest expression in the Loire valley where it produces diamond cut wines with searing acidity and impeccable balance with flavours of bruised apple, quince, and lanolin (wet wool).
Producer
This organic estate is run by the energetic mother and daughter team of Monique and Tessa Laroche. The estate comprises 9.6 Ha of Chenin Blanc (white) and 1 Ha Cabernet Franc (red). Savennières is located on the Western edge of the Anjou region, not far from the city of Angers with the vineyards located on hillsides along the Loire river. The soils in Savennières are predominantly schists with some sandstone and clay producing rich and powerful wines.
Region
Savennières is a Loire appellation that produces exclusively dry, white wines from Chenin Blanc. The vineyards are situated on the north bank of the Loire River, in the Anjou-Saumur district. Dry Savennières is typically more full-bodied than Vouvray (sec), and a significant step up in concentration and quality from basic Anjou blanc. Savennières is high in acidity and tends to be austere and unapproachable in youth, but can blossom into something spectacular with a little time in the cellar.
Food Pairing
Thanks to high acidity and restrained fruit flavours this is a very versatile food wine that pairs perfectly with fish, shellfish, smoked fish, poultry and pork. Will also suit creamy goat and cow cheeses and hams.
