Chardonnay is undoubtedly the most famous white grape in the world. When it is grown in the right conditions (similar to those found in Burgundy) it has the ability to produce the most exquisitely textured wines in the world when it is subjected to a period of maturation in real oak barrels. The best wines show white peach and vanilla aromas on the nose and a tightly structured palate with fine acidity, minerality and a distinctive creaminess.
Maté Brajkovich, a Dalmation by birth, arrived in New Zealand in 1938. In 1944 he and his parents purchased a property with a small vineyard and Kumeu River wines was born. However it was not until Michael, Mate’s son, took over in 1982 that the true potential of the vineyards began to be fully realised. Michael, the first New Zealander to become a Master of Wine, used his knowledge to vastly improved the quality of the fruit. Its Chardonnay wines are arguably the best in New Zealand.
Auckland is one of New Zealand’s oldest wine regions, established in the early 1900s by Croatian, Lebanese and English winemakers. Spread across a large, geographically diverse area, Auckland encompasses three distinctive subregions, the island of Waiheke, historic West Auckland and stretches north to the coastal enclave of Matakana. It produces intense reds from Syrah and world class Chardonnay.
With its fine mineral acidity and creamy texture Oaked Chardonnay is great with a wide range of dishes including creamy cheese, truffles, poultry, veal and rich fish and shellfish.
