Description
Description
This wine has aromas of ripe blackberry and red cherry, with a hint of spice. The palate is ripe and juicy, but still elegant and true to Selvapiana’s classic style, with a tight structure and lifted, floral finish. Great with grilled red meat, game or rustic pasta dishes and stews.
Grape
Sangiovese is a red grape grown throughout Italy, but perhaps achieves its greatest expression in Tuscany. It produces medium to full bodied wines with very high acidity and shows Morello cherry, savoury herb, dried tomato and spice character.
Producer
There is no better producer in Rufina than Selvapiana, which has been in the family of Francesco Giuntini since 1827. Federico Giuntini Masseti now runs the property, which is situated just north of the town of Pontassieve. The estate covers 245 hectares, 60 of which are planted under vine (95% being Sangiovese), 22 are olive groves, and the rest is covered by woods. For the most part, the vineyards face west, though Selvapiana’s prized Bucerchiale vineyard is south west facing.
Region
Chianti Rùfina is one of the smallest sub-zones of Chianti around the town of Rùfina in the foothills of the Apennine mountains in Tuscany. The high altitude is significant because it means a big diurnal temperature which helps to retain acidity, freshness and give more intense aromatics.
Food Pairing
With its characteristic high acidity and robust tannins Sangiovese demands food to show at its best. Perfect with roast meats, game, meaty pasta dishes and hard cheeses. It also has an affinity with any tomato based dishes.
