The appassimento process lets the ripe grapes shrivel on the vine concentrating the sugars giving the wines more richness and power. This wine shows deep plum and raisin character. Great with grilled meats or game.
Negroamaro is a red variety found predominantly in Puglia which produces medium weight wines which are high in acidity and tannin. Negroamaro shows clove, cinnamon and earthy notes on the nose and blackberry fruit on the palate.
Casa Vinicola Botter is a family owned winery headquartered in Fossalta di Piave, a small town near Venice. Founded in 1928 by Carlo and Maria Botter, the business started by selling wine in barrels, before moving to bottled wine in the ‘60’s under the direction of brothers Arnaldo & Enzo Botter. Today they are one of the largest producers and exporters of Italian wines and produce wines in nearly all of Italy’s wine regions including Veneto, Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia, Sicily and Tuscany.
Puglia was historically important in terms of quantity, if not always quality – however with the implementation of modern techniques and technology things are changing fast for the better. There are several DOCs and DOCGs in Puglia but few of them have forged any sort of international reputation – Salice Salentino, Copertino, Squinzano and Primitivo di Manduria are the most well-known. Puglia’s strong suit is alcohol and flavour and a range of powerful local red grape varieties. Negroamaro, meaning ‘black and bitter’, is one of the most planted grapes in the region. It is often blended with the softer, more velvety Malvasia Nera or Nero di Troia. But the grape of most interest to non-Italians is the early-ripening Primitivo. DNA analysis has proved that this vine variety is one and the same as California’s Zinfandel.
Negroamaro produces rustic wines with good acidity that complement grilled and stewed red meats, pastas in ragu, salamis and hard cheeses.
