Grape

A red grape grown widely in Italy but most famous for producing Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in the region of Abruzzo. Not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that is made from Sangiovese in Tuscany. Montepulciano produces simple, chunky wines with notes of blackberry jam, cherry and pepper with moderate acidity.

Region

Abruzzo is a region located in the mountainous central part of Italy along the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered by the Molise to the south, Marche to the north and Lazio to the west. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the most famous export. It is made from the Montepulciano grape – not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that is made in Tuscany from Sangiovese! In the last decade the region has been producing increasingly good white wines from the white Trebbiano and Pecorino varieties.

Food Pairing

Montepulciano produces simple, fruity wines that pair well with rustic salamis, stews, pizzas and hard cheeses.
