Description
Provencal rosés are the most subtle of all rosés commanding the highest prices. Whispering Angel has become the benchmark to which all others aspire. A blend of Grenache, Rolle and Cinsault, this is the palest pink, with crunchy red fruit and a touch of spice. Great with fish, especially red mullet.
Grape
Produced in Provence in southeast France this style is a blend of red grapes that nearly always includes Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Provence rosés tend to be some of the most delicate rosés in terms of colour, body and tannins with strawberry fruit character and fresh acidity.
Producer
Situated in the cool hills in the heart of Provence, Château d’Esclans has been owned and run by Sacha Lichine since 2006. Along with Patrick Leon (formally the Managing Director of Mouton Rothschild), Sacha set out to craft a world-class brand that aims at producing the greatest rosé on the planet. This elevated site is most famous for its old-vine Grenache, much of which was planted in the early part of the 20th century. These vines are hand-picked as close to sunrise as possible and blended with equally cared for Vermentino.
Region
This fascinating region sits along the Mediterranean coast of France, bordered by the Rhône River to the west and the Côte d’Azur on the east. It’s small: only about 150 miles long and 100 miles north to south. Wine has been made here for over 2600 years, making Provence the oldest wine-producing region of France. Provence is famous for its very lightly coloured rosés, but also makes chunky reds from Mourvèdre and luscious whites from Rolle.
Food Pairing
Fresh and fruity with good acidity Provence Rosé is excellent with grilled fish like salmon or tuna, prawn cocktail and dishes with roasted peppers and aubergines. Also great with Provençal classics like Bouillabaisse fish stew.
