If we had a house wine this would be it. Great crunchy Loire Sauvignon Blanc with tangy citrus and grapefruit character. Amazing with Goat cheese but would also work with any fish or white meats.
Sauvignon Blanc is a white variety that came originally from Bordeaux, but is now grown all over the world. Today key areas are the Loire where it produces grassy, mineral, smoky wines and Marlborough where it makes exotic elderflower and gooseberry scented wines. Acidity is always high and body medium.
Domaine Guy Allion has been in the Allion family for 4 generations, though was only really dedicated to wine production in the late 1960s. Cedric Allion, son of Guy, now runs the estate. This domaine with its beautiful Touraine-style house made out of tufa produces first class Sauvignon from vines grown on perruche (sandy-clay) soil. The estate is managed according to the Terra Vitis programme, a codified system which posits not only respect for the environment but knowledge of the land, parcel by parcel. This sensitivity to the environment means that natural rather than chemical solutions are used vineyard.
Touraine is a wine district and AOC at the very heart of France’s Loire Valley wine region. Its main commercial center, the city of Tours, sits precisely half-way between Sancerre and Nantes (the home of Muscadet). Wines made under the Touraine regional appellation may be white, red, rosé or sparkling (in all three colors). The white wines are most commonly based on Sauvignon Blanc, which accounts for 43 percent of all Touraine plantings. Touraine Sauvignon Blanc always offers great value for money though it is always simpler than the more illustrious Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.
Touraine Sauvignon Blanc with restrained citrus and gooseberry fruit and high acidity is far more food friendly and works with shellfish, fish, smoked fish and is especially good with creamy goat cheese.
