Description
Description
Although not cheap Saint-Aubin offers much better value than its more illustrious neighbours of Chassagne and Puligny. This is a complex and rich white Burgundy showing white peach, smoky vanilla oak and mineral character. Great with roast chicken, fish or creamy cheese like Brie.
Grape
Chardonnay is undoubtedly the most famous white grape in the world. When it is grown in the right conditions (similar to those found in Burgundy) it has the ability to produce the most exquisitely textured wines in the world when it is subjected to a period of maturation in real oak barrels. The best wines show white peach and vanilla aromas on the nose and a tightly structured palate with fine acidity, minerality and a distinctive creaminess.
Producer
Domaine Larue produces direct, consistent wines vinified in a style both modern and one which draws on the family’s nearly 75 years of experience. The domaine’s holdings include high-elevation slopes on diversely varying clay and limestone soils facing south, southeast, and southwest. Total planting area is 11 hectares for white grapes (95% Chardonnay, 5% Aligoté) and 6 hectares for red (100% Pinot Noir). They have been experimenting with biodynamics, and certain parcels are farmed entirely as such. Larue’s red wines do a great job of balancing freshness and richness without losing power. The whites express the unique and beautiful style these areas are known for, with purity of fruit and crisp, flinty minerality.
Region
Saint-Aubin is a region in Burgundy bordering the more famous and expensive Chassagne-Montrachet and and Puligny-Montrachet. It produces mostly red from Pinot Noir, but the whites (Chardonnay) are consider. The reds are light, but in good vintages offers lots of very seductive, pretty fruit, soft tannins and can be excellent value for money. The whites are described as baby Chassagnes combining the smokiness of Puligny and the fat of Meursault.
Food Pairing
With its fine mineral acidity and creamy texture Oaked Chardonnay is great with a wide range of dishes including creamy cheese, truffles, poultry, veal and rich fish and shellfish
