Description
A great value Margaux from a superb vintage that is drinking now (though could be cellared for another 5-10 years). Really elegant and silky with rich cassis, damson and fruitcake spice. Classic with lamb or mature hard cheese.
Grape
Left bank Bordeaux is usually a blend of around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc giving wines with medium body and unparalleled elegance with cassis, spice, cedar and pencil shaving character.
Producer
The 32 hectare Margaux vineyard of Chateau Paveil de Luze is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. All of the Cabernet Franc vines have been removed and replaced. Located in the upper northwest corner of the appellation, the vineyard is planted in one large, single block of vines situated in the commune of Soussans, close to the chateau. The terroir is mostly gravel with some clay in the soils. Vinification takes place in small, temperature controlled, stainless steel vats that are 150 hectoliters in size. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank. The wine of Paveil de Luze is aged in an average of 30% new, French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling. On average, the annual production of Chateau Paveil de Luze is close to 12,500 cases per year.
Region
If Pauillac is the bastion of ‘traditional’ Red Bordeaux, Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are some of the region’s most sensual and alluring. The largest commune in the Médoc, it encompasses the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labaude, in addition to the village of Margaux itself. Its finest examples are paragons of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.
Food Pairing
The perfect balance of acidity and sweetness with restrained flavours makes these wines fairly versatile matching well with red meats such as roast lamb or roast beef. Also excellent with hard cheese.
