Description
This is quite simply the best Bacchus I have ever tasted from anywhere in the UK. Winbirri means wine meadow in Anglo-Saxon. This has elderflower, citrus and grapefruit flavours. Would be great with goat cheese or white meats like pork and chicken.
Grape
Bacchus is a white grape that was created in Germany by crossing Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. Bacchus is increasingly grown in England where it produces wines that are high in acidity in a Sauvignon blanc-like style with grapefruit and citrus character.
Producer
Winbirri is owned and run by Lee Dyer. Lee inherited the vineyard from his father who planted 200 vines as a hobby in 2007. Now the area under vine totals 33 acres, making it the second largest vineyard in East Anglia. The site was well chosen because the soils are predominantly sandy, giving great drainage, and flinty, imparting minerality to the wines. The winery has capacity for 150,000 bottles per annum and was built in 2012.
Region
It’s a relatively unknown fact that there are 57 Vineyards in East Anglia with 12 located in Norfolk. East Anglia is one of the premier wine-growing regions of the UK. East Anglia’s territory stretches over the sandy areas of the coast to sandy loams in mid-Suffolk and dense clays in the heart of Essex. These Vineyards produce over half the Bacchus grown in Britain and a large proportion of the Pinot Noir. The East Anglian Vineyards produce aromatic, elegant wines, winning more National Trophies last year than any other region.
Food Pairing
With high acidity and restrained fruit flavours Bacchus is a versatile food wine working well with shellfish, fish, pork, chicken and creamy cheeses.
